Viva Palestina hunger strike is off - for now

The Egyptian government had climbed down over its previous refusal to allow the Viva Palestina convoy into the country on its way with medical aid for the people of Gaza.
The Egyptian terms for allowing the convoy access to Gaza via the Rafah crossing have been announced as:
1) The convoy must cross into Egypt from Syria;
2) It must get permission from Israel to enter Gaza; and
3) It must hand over all aid/vehicles to UNWRA.
Travellers sent messages saying that they only agreed to the first condition, and that it was by no means certain even so that they would be allowed into Gaza.
Team leader of the Bradford contingent on the convoy, Arshad Ali, confirmed the agreement in a text message on Monday evening: "Yes, it's true. We have to go back to Syria - another three days added to our journey. We will end our hunger strike tonight. Thanks to everyone for your solidarity. It meant a lot to us all. We will be leaving Aqaba at 5 in the morning (7am UK time)."
A message from another traveller on the Twitter social networking site read: "Back to Syria means 700Km back northwards by road, means a long, hard drive and means additional fuel costs. Plus 5 days wasted in Aqaba!"
The agreement came after a Turkish mediator reached a deal with the Egyptian consul in Jordan's Red Sea port of Aqaba. At first, the Turkish official requested that the convoy be allowed to enter Egypt through the Red Sea port of Nuweiba, the most direct way to Gaza, but this was refused.
The convoy is now heading to the Syrian port of Latakia to sail from there in a Turkish-funded charter vessel for a 19-hour trip to the Egyptian Mediterranean port of El Arish, and then to Gaza.
When the Egyptians blocked access, the convoyers declared a hunger strike and supporters throughout the world joined in.
Meanwhile, at least 300 French participants of the Gaza Freedom March spent the night camped out in front of their embassy in Cairo, bringing a major road in the Egyptian capital to a halt as riot police wielding plexiglass shields surrounded them. On Sunday, police briefly detained 38 international participants in El-Arish, the port to which the convoy is now headed. Another group of eight people, including American, British, Spanish, Japanese and Greek citizens, were detained at the bus station of El-Arish in the afternoon of December 27.
Supporters are urged to write to the Egyptian embassy welcoming the country's climb down, but insisting the convoy be allowed into Gaza.

2) Plans for Sunday 6th

Due to logistical difficulties, not all of the vehicles going to Gaza will be coming into Central London for a send off on Sunday morning. Those driving the 15 ambulances dedicated to the memory of those killed during Israel’s assault on Gaza last December/January whilst on duty will attend a photo call and mini send off for supporters, families, and media outlets. This will take place on the Embankment between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge at 10am.

Important notice to all UK Convoy volunteers

Below is the plan for Saturday 5th December

Vehicles must arrive at London Gateway services on the M1 just south of the M25, it is the last service station on the mortorway, on Saturday from 11am to complete the final paperwork, get the vehicles stickered up, sign the indemnity forms and so forth.

On Sunday 6th December

Vehicles will gather on the Sunday from 9am at the services on the *CLACKET LANE* SERVICE STATION ON THE M25 HEADING EASTBOUND, THE ANTI-CLOCKWISE DIRECTION, FOR HEADING DOWN TO THE M20.

There will be 15 ambulances to go to the Embankment in London on Sunday from 10am to 11.30am for a photocall and official Convoy launch.

These vehicles will then drive around Parliament Square and then down Embankment to East London down the Whitechapel Road, down to the Blackwall Tunnel approach road then through the Blackwall tunnel and down to Folkestone.

It's then just three thousand miles or so to Gaza.

Pete Seeger song supports campaign against Israeli house demolitions

Anyone who owns a radio probably knows the song "Turn, Turn, Turn" (To everything there is a season) very well. A number of versions of this song have become permanent fixtures on the play lists of most popular music radio stations. Here's what the listeners don't know: every time this song is played, the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions receives a few dollars, which accumulate to a "several thousand dollars every year," according to the committee's co-founder and coordinator.

The Israeli Committee against House Demolitions (ICAHD) is a non-profit organization that uses non-violent means to oppose Israeli demolition of homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Seeger has been donating some of the song's royalties to ICAHD for ten years.

The banjo-playing Seeger, 90, is considered one of the pioneers of American folk music. He is known for his political activism no less than for his musical achievements. In the 1930 and 1940’s he was involved in the establishment of worker unions and in the 1950s he was interrogated by Senator Joe McCarthy over suspicions of belonging to the Communist Party. In recent years Seeger has been involved in efforts to clean up the Hudson River in New York and performed at U.S. President Barack Obama's inauguration celebration.

The lyrics of the song "Turn, Turn, Turn" are the words of King Solomon from the book of Ecclesiastes. "All around the world, songs are being written that use old public domain material, and I think it's only fair that some of the money from the songs go to the country or place of origin, even though the composer may be long dead or unknown," Seeger said in an interview with Acoustic Guitar magazine in 2002.

"With 'Turn, Turn, Turn' I wanted to send 45 percent, because [in addition to the music] I did write six words and one more word repeated three times, so I figured I'd keep five percent of the royalties for the words. I was going to send it to London, where I am sure the committee that oversees the use of the King James version exists, and they probably could use a little cash. But then I realized, why not send it to where the words were originally written?"

ICAHD's Halper met with Seeger in New York and remarked that "he said he thought it was appropriate that the biblical part of the song make its way to Israel ? He doesn't want to take credit for it."

Halper brought another message from Seeger to the Israelis: "He said that artists and cooks - it was important for him to include cooks - must stand up and demand a just peace. That is the duty of artists and cooks.

Urgent Notice for UK Convoy Volunteers

Dear Volunteers

This is a final notification that you must submit your Vehicle Registration and any outstanding documentation for your personal convoy registration.

All information must be submitted no later than 18:00 Monday 30th November there will be absolutely no exceptions to this.

Failure to do so will result in you not joining the convoy at any stage along the route to Gaza and at the Gaza border at Rafah. We will be able to identify each and every authorised VP volunteer by their personalised VP Identification card and all vehicles will be identified by registration number and VP vehicle convoy number.

After 18:00 on Monday the 30th November we will be submitting a list of all authorised VP convoy members and VP vehicle registration numbers to the border authorities. If you are not on the list you are not coming.

We have made numerous requests for this information and this will be the final one.

Team Leaders it is your responsibility to ensure that all your team members are fully aware of this requirement.

Bradford Eid party this Sunday

Forty-four drivers who are taking 20 vehicles to Gaza – including three fully-fitted ambulances – loaded with medical aid and other needs worth over £100,000, will have a super Eid send-off as Bradford’s Viva Palestina branch prepares for the marathon journey in December.

Journalist Yvonne Ridley, who converted to Islam after working in Afghanistan, will be the featured guest speaker at the event, which takes place at the City Venue, 245 Sunbridge Road, Bradford, BD1 2JY on Sunday, November 29, starting at 5.30pm.

Former Labour cabinet minister Tony Benn will speak to the gathering over a video link. There will be specially-composed songs from Bradford singer-songwriter Karl Dallas, as well as stalls, a celebrity auction, and showing of videos shot during the trip of the first convoy, in February.

The Bradford drivers will be joining a mission heading from London, with Americans flying in to take part, forming the core of a convoy heading through Europe, into the Balkans, northern Greece, Turkey, Syria, Jordan and into Egypt – picking up support along the way.

They will be spending Christmas Day on the road, and aim to be in Gaza on December 27, the first anniversary of the attack on Gaza, during which over 1400 civilians were killed, a third of them children.

We've got the leaflets, we've got the banners, we've got the placards, we've even got "Support the boycott" shopping bags to give away. All we need is YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

We had a very successful vigil outside Morrisons' HQ on Nov 13, as a result of which they agreed to meet with us (something they'd refused to do since our first attempt to open a dialogue back in May). But they are still prevaricating, asking for "evidence" that the Israeli produce they sell comes from illegal settlements. Obviously, that's impossible, since we don't have access to their suppliers.

SO WE MUST KEEP UP THE PRESSURE!

Please, whatever you've got planned for Saturday, put it on hold between 12 noon and 2.30pm and join us outside Morrisons, Rushton Avenue, Thornbury, Bradford , BD3 7HZ. I've attached a map to help you get there.

Come, bring all your friends and family (and especially your children) and show Morrisons we're not kidding.

YORK to GAZA by AMBULANCE

Professor the Baroness Afshar cut the ribbon on the ex-NHS ambulance at a ceremony to launch the appeal on Saturday 14th November at 11am outside St Michael le Belfry, next to York Minster.

The Yorkshire ambulance, with its team of volunteers from York, Scarborough, Norton & Gilling East, will be joining an international convoy organised by Viva Palestina taking supplies to the siege ridden people of Gaza who are still suffering a blockade lasting over 2 years to date, with access to essential food and medical supplies severely curtailed by the government of Israel.

Nicholas Hall, of Fulford York, has volunteered to drive to Gaza. He says " It is nearly 12 months since Israel's cruel and criminal attack on Gaza which killed over 1,400 men, women & children - destroying 8,000 homes and countless schools and businesses - the world's governments have so far failed to bring Israel to task for their actions, leaving it up to us - ordinary people working together to bring hope and relief to the siege ridden Gazan people.

The York ambulance together with thirteen vehicles from Bradford will set off in early December with plans to arrive in Gaza soon after Christmas.

Street Collections!

Viva Palestina volunteers in Bradford took to the streets this weekend to collect donations for medical supplies, which will be sent on the aid convoy leaving for Gaza this December 5th. The weather was cold and wet, but our volunteers with buckets in hands, smiles on our faces and Palestine in our hearts raised an amazing £3000 from the streets of Bradford.

A special Thank You to all those who helped in collecting, donating and supporting the people of Gaza, and I hope many more will join us next weekend! :)

Could someone organise and send this email down to head office and make sure plans are put in place - if they can help us in anyway with the following issues?

Vehicle Requirements and Check List:

1. Vehicle Requirements: Vehicle needs to be in good working order and in good cosmetic condition with a valid MOT test certificate. Regardless of age. All vehicles will be inspected locally before the convoy travel date by VP member.(Remember we will be travelling 3000 miles. It would be pointless in taking a vehicle that will be ready to expire at the end of the journey. Broken down vehicles will cost the convoy inconvenience and time).
If vehicles are bought collectively, we should get favorable rates.

2. Vehicle Documentation: The vehicle will need to be signed off as permanent export. There is a part on your Vehicle License Document (Log Book) to fill out and send to DVLA. An accompanying letter from the registered owner should be attached stating the vehicle has been donated to VP. Please keep extra copies of all documentation as you may need to provide them to the relevant authorities along the way.

3. Insurance: Vehicle and health insurance cover will be required. If you have valid insurance cover this should cover you to drive through Europe. Health cover should also be taken out for those who wish to do so. (If this is done collectively we should get favorable rates).

4. Breakdown Cover: Vehicle breakdown cover should also be taken out for those who wish to do so. The convoy will have a Mobile Support Unit in the event of any emergencies.

5. Sleeping Arrangements: On the convoy you will be required to sleep on the road side as a worst case scenario. It may be possible for you to leave room in your vehicles for this purpose. In any case it will be required of you to bring along adequate sleeping equipment.

a. Tent 2/3 (depending on the number of people traveling.
b. Sleeping bag and pillow
c. Inflatable bed
d. Blankets

6. Clothing: Unlike the last convoy we will be travelling in various climates in a range of wet , hot and cold weather conditions. It is very important to bring along appropriate and sensible clothing and foot wear.(The majority of the time you will be sat in your vehicle).

a. Water proofs
b. Padded jacket
c. Fleeces
d. Thermal wear
e. Casual wear
f. Boots
g. Trainers
h. Slippers/sandals

7. Vaccination/Medications: As with all travelling be sure to have your jabs. Contact your GP and make sure you have been properly immunized and have all the certificates. If you take special or regular medication be sure to take extra supplies and take any special advice from your GP. You are also advised to take extra general medication as a matter of course.

a. Pain killers
b. Paracetamols
c. Asprin
d. Dyralyte
e. Influenza tablets
f. Anticeptic creams and lotions
g. Plasters/bandages

8. Vehicle Equipment: From the experience gained from the last convoy it is advisable to take various items and parts with you as this will reduce much inconvenience on the journey. Some of these items are law requirements in some countries.

a. Full set of service parts, spark/glow plugs, fuel filter, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, oil, brake/clutch fluid, power steering fluid, screen wash, anti freeze, water, radiator sealant.
b. Spare fan belts, pulley belts, power steering belts, timing belt(please have your timing belt checked and changed if required).
c. Suitable jack and wheel brace, spare wheel, spare tyre.
d. Hazard warning triangle.
e. Torch lamp, spare batteries, fuses, full set of spare bulbs.
f. Tow rope/tow bar.
g. First Aid Kit, Fire extinguisher, 20ltr water butt with tap.

9. Additional Equipment: From experiences gained from the last convoy there are a number of items to take along to help the ease and smooth running of the convoy.

a. CB radio (10km range) .every vehicle on the convoy should be fitted with a CB radio. We had various communication problems on the last trip. These radios will be very handy in the event of emergencies.(The communications infrastructure of Gaza has been completely wiped out.250 CB radios will set up communication networks for the emergency services there).If this is done collectively we should get favorable rates.
b. AC/DC power Inverter(1000w/3000w). Every vehicle should be fitted with one of these. This piece of equipment has invaluable use for the traveler. Also this item will provide the homeless of Gaza with power supply for basic needs as the electricity can go out for 15 days at a time. If this item is bought collectively we should get favorable rates.
c. Gas Stove 2/3 burner. This item will be of use to those who wish to do some light cooking on the journey. This should be a heavy duty cast iron type. The main purpose of this item is to provide the homeless with cooking provisions for 250 families.
d. Communications. As we all know too well the cost of using a mobile phone abroad. 3G network phones enable you to use skype. With skype you can communicate around the world for free with another skype user.

10. Return journey: most people will be catching a flight back from Egypt. It is much cheaper to fly back from Sharm Al Sheikh than Cairo. If this is pre arranged with you group leader and block booked ,we should get favorable rates. It is NOT advisable to travel back by road, however if any one wishes to do so there will be a team coming back by road, Please be sure to put your name down on the list.
